The need is the most obvious thing that surrounds me.

It yells my name whenever I leave my compound

and refuses to be quieted.

It’s everywhere – the trash heaps, the slums

– and impossible to look past.

It yells from the children with enlarged bellies

and open wounds.

It says, ‘You can’t make a dent; you can’t

bring change; it will never be enough.’

And there are days when I listen,

when I become overwhelmed by it all.

Because it’s true – I can never make a dent.

But I am here for love, not need,

and that looks completely different.

I cannot change a slum within two weeks of

being here, but I can love.

I can walk with little Mercy’s hand in mine,

so that she feels safe and protected for

a few moments in her week.

I can hold precious Ian in my arms for a few minutes.

Although he has been through too much pain

to smile or even respond,

I can give my heart to him and pray for love to

melt every wall.

I can play with my little friend

whose name I don’t know because she can’t

hear or speak.

I can give her attention and praise

she does not otherwise receive.

And I can love her because that goes

deeper than words. I can love.

It’s simple really, our walk with Jesus,

whether it’s in the slums or in the big cities.

Our role is to love.

Sometimes that’s meeting practical needs,

but sometimes it’s a hug.

I pray I will do that well this week.
